The running track in Bedford started out as cinder and was known as Newnham Stadium. It went synthetic in 1989, or maybe 1990. The surface is Spiketop and is believed to have been resprayed in 1998 by G. Thornton (Contracts) Ltd. Fatima Whitbread officially opened the stadium building on 25th April 1993. In 2000 the long jump, triple jump and pole vault runways swapped positions. The main pole vault area moved to outside the back straight and was given a soft synthetic surface around the central bed. The old long jump and triple jump runway and boards are still there, although the pits have been removed, and the pole vault runway and boxes can still be seen in front of the stands, but with the rails taken out those boxes look unusable. There's also an indoor straight at the site.
