This Belfast running track was originally cinder and referred to as the Malone track. Synthetic En-Tout-Cas runways are believed to have been installed here in about 1966, the first track in the UK to use such a surface. The surroundings are very pleasant and rural. The track itself went synthetic in the 1970s and was named after the 1972 Olympic Pentathlon champion. A new pavilion was built in 1996, which also houses the offices of the Northern Ireland Athletics Federation. Club Track resurfaced it in 2002 and it reopened in November 2002, although it wasn't due to be remarked until spring 2003.
