More about University of Wales Aberystwyth Track
The running track in Aberystwyth is a single lane 400m tarmacadam jogging loop around the University's synthetic football and hockey pitch. It's thought to date from around 1998 or 1999, when it replaced a 6 lane 400m/440y red cinder track. That earlier track had a 6 lane sprint straight measuring 200 yards rather than metres, and both ends of it can still be made out. With a slight detour it's still possible to run its full length, because the centre of the single lane loop sits roughly in line with the outer curb of the old track. A few distance markings are painted on the surface, and the start line sits in an unusual spot, roughly where the 100m start of the extended straight used to be. Alan Carter threw 16.60 in the shot put here on 11 May 1963, a mark that appears in the UK all-time list. The shot circle is the only field event facility still visible.
