The official stadium opening meeting took place on 23rd July 1960, although the running track in Bournemouth had already been in use earlier that summer. It went synthetic in 1984 with an Avonsport surface and was resurfaced in 1990. The local council manage it, having taken responsibility back from Bournemouth AC. A new yellow roof went on the grandstand in late 1999 along with an announcers box. In spring 2001 the area around the 1500m start had to be repaired after continued damage from tree roots. The poplar trees outside the back straight came down in summer 2002, with silver birch due to replace them in spring 2003. A lottery bid went in during summer 2002 covering a resurfacing, 8 lanes all round, better floodlights, moving the internal long jump and triple jump runways outside the track, moving the pole vault box to the other end of the runway and providing an external throwing area with facilities for all the throws. As of February 2003 the outcome wasn't known.
