The track was originally cinder but has been synthetic for some time. It was resurfaced in 1997. In July 1999, the stadium became the new temporary home of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club although they may remain here until 2003. The stadium is a designated sports ground and all events with an attendance of over 500 people have to operate in accordance with the safety certificate issued by Brighton & Hove Council. Temporary seating was installed in 1999 alongside the back straight but the outer lanes cannot be seen from some of these seats. Two temporary uncovered stands with a joint capacity of about 900 seats were installed in 2000 at the East End of the track on the top bend and these seats were designed so that all lanes of the track can be seen. In the spring of 2001, a new throwing cage with one circle was installed behind the goal on the first bend D. As a consequence the SP fan has been turned round so one now throws away from the centre of the track. There is a purpose-built hospitality suite with a bar and catering facilities for 150 people, 2 first-aid rooms, a PA system, CCTV and turnstile monitoring systems and a TV gantry at the rear of the South Stand.
