The running track in Brighton started out as cinder but has been synthetic for some time, and was resurfaced in 1997. In July 1999 the stadium became the temporary home of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, who may stay until 2003. It's a designated sports ground, so any event drawing over 500 people has to run in line with the safety certificate issued by Brighton & Hove Council. Temporary seating went in alongside the back straight in 1999, although the outer lanes can't be seen from some of those seats. Two more temporary uncovered stands holding about 900 between them followed in 2000, at the East End of the track on the top bend, designed so that every lane is visible. In spring 2001 a new throwing cage with one circle went in behind the goal on the first bend D, and the shot put fan was turned round as a result, so throws now go away from the centre of the track. There's a purpose-built hospitality suite with a bar and catering for 150 people, 2 first-aid rooms, a PA system, CCTV and turnstile monitoring systems, and a TV gantry at the back of the South Stand.
