This running track in Barnes started out as cinder and was upgraded to a Mondo Sportflex Super X Classic surface in December 1993, though it probably wasn't used for a meeting until 1994. There are no dedicated track staff, and users were meant to buy tickets from the pay and display machine for the tennis courts by the car park, although whether that still applies isn't clear. The fields are managed by Richmond-upon-Thames Borough and used to be called Barn Elms Playing Fields, while the neighbouring Barn Elms Sports Centre is run by Wandsworth Borough, which is somewhat confusing. Races often start at the 200m point so that the stand sits on the home straight. Richmond and Wandsworth Councils have a joint plan to develop the whole site, but whether the track facilities get upgraded has still to be decided. The steeplechase barriers, water jump included, were made height adjustable by 2002.
