The running track in Finsbury Park was originally built in the early 1920s as a 495y D-shaped cinder track with only one short straight. It became an oval 6 lane 440y cinder track in 1952 and was later adjusted to 400m. Around 1992 the home straight and the outside two lanes from the 200m mark were converted to synthetic, and the whole track followed in 1996. Charles Lawrence did both upgrades, and the surface is Spiketop. The ILEA, the Sports Council and the London Borough of Haringey funded the partial upgrade, modelled on a Scottish Sports Council initiative at Bathgate, while the Foundation for Sports and the Arts funded the full one. The two stage approach came down to how little money was around at the time. The straights are relatively short at about 70m. The home straight is only 10 lanes wide from the 80m line, so 100m and 110mH races can take just 6 competitors. A viewing gallery sits on top of the pavilion, though it appears disused. A grant secured in January 2000 paid for electronic timing and photo finish equipment. The infield is a grass American football pitch used by London Capitals AFC. The gym at the track got better weights equipment in 2002.
