Steve Cram officially opened the synthetic running track in Cannock on 20th September 1986. It cost £300,000 and originally had a Chevron surface. The track is thought to have started out as cinder, possibly built in 1951, since the stadium used to be called Festival Stadium, a reference to the Festival of Britain that year. The AW report of 8th November 1986 calls it Festival Stadium, while an AW advert for a September 1987 meeting, published a month beforehand, calls it Cannock Stadium. Unusually, the covered stand sits at the 100m start rather than nearer the finish. The infield is a football pitch used by Brocton FC. The stadium has since had a £0.5 million revamp, thought to have included resurfacing the track and extending the stadium building to add a function suite and improved changing rooms.
