How to find and join an athletics club near you
13 October 2025 · 2 min read
Joining an athletics club is simpler than it looks from the outside: find one, turn up, and let the club handle the paperwork. Here is what that actually involves.
Start with a club finder
Each home nation's governing body runs its own club finder: England Athletics, scottishathletics, Welsh Athletics, and Athletics Northern Ireland. Search by postcode or county and you will get a list of affiliated clubs near you, usually with the age groups and disciplines each one covers.
What happens when you turn up
Most clubs let you try a session or two before committing to anything. Training is typically organised by age group and ability rather than thrown together, and a coach or leader runs the session, so you are not expected to know what you are doing on your first visit.
Registering with your governing body
You do not register yourself directly. Once you decide to join, your club submits your details and registration fee to its governing body, and you are issued a Unique Registration Number (URN). For England Athletics, individual annual membership for the 2026 to 2027 season is £23, though fees are set each season so it is worth checking the current figure before you join.
What membership actually gets you
Coached sessions in a safeguarded environment, and eligibility to compete officially at UK Athletics licensed events, meaning your results and personal bests get recorded properly (see our guide to reading Power of 10 for what that looks like once you start competing).
Already know your nearest track?
If you already have a track in mind, its listing on this site often names the clubs based there directly, which can be quicker than working backwards from a club finder. Browse all UK athletics tracks or jump straight to your county's page to see what's nearby.
