More about Canterbury High School Track
A Lottery grant paid for a brand new running track in Canterbury, with work starting in August 2000. Fox Sports Surfaces completed the surfacing in April 2001 using a Conica Conipur texture spray, and Athletics Markings Ltd. finished the lane markings on 4th May 2001. The host club first trained on it on 4th September 2001. It was originally built with the main long jump and triple jump runway inside the track alongside the home straight, and the shot put fan inside the top bend. Leaving the main runway there would probably have cost the track a full certification, because of safety concerns around the interaction with long throws, so new runways were built inside the top bend instead. That, plus how close the original shot put fan sat to the pole vault runway, meant the fan moved outside the track next to the car park. The building beside the track is the Body & Mind Health & Fitness Club at Canterbury High School, who manage the track in a public private partnership. Richard Caborn, Minister for Sport, officially opened the Sports Centre and track on 26th February 2002.
