The running track in Cwmbran began as cinder in the mid 1960s. Brian Clough laid the foundation stone for the stadium building on 13th March 1973, and the synthetic track was finished in April 1974 with a 3M Tartan surface. It hosted the UK Championships during the 1970s. Avon Polytrack went down in 1980, followed by ClubTrack NP113 in July 1988. A £5.6M refurbishment of track and stadium started in summer 2000, and the track reopened in mid August 2002, with Charles Lawrence as main contractor for that work. The track was completely resurfaced and the field event facilities entirely renewed. The main stadium was restored, and the uncovered seating in front of the main stand taken out. The track was set to close for the early part of summer 2004 for snagging work.
