More about Birmingham Alexander Stadium Indoor Track
A Sport England Lottery award of £2.5 million was announced on 7th September 2001 to develop a high performance indoor athletics training facility at Birmingham Alexander Stadium. The first meeting took place over the weekend of 18th January 2003, and it serves as the indoor athletics centre for the West Midlands arm of the English Institute of Sport. Inside there's a 132 metre sprint straight, two long jump pits and runways, one pole vault runway, a practise area for throws, high jump and a weights room. Birmingham City Council also put money in, alongside UK Athletics, and the whole facility is believed to have cost £3.2 million. It stands between the Knowles Stand and the former astroturf pitch, so it covers the old throws area, which is being moved elsewhere rather than lost. The surface on this indoor running track in Birmingham is Conipur ISP Sprint. There has also been talk of extending the building later to house the demountable indoor track used at the National Indoor Arena.
