Alexander Stadium: complete visitor guide

Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr is the largest athletics stadium in the UK, and getting there is a bit different from most sports venues: there is no general parking at the ground itself. Here is what to know before you go, whatever event has brought you here.

Where it is

Getting there by train

Perry Barr railway station is the direct link to the stadium, a short walk from the entrance. The station has had step-free access to its platforms improved in recent years, so it is a reasonable option if you need level access throughout your journey.

Getting there by bus and shuttle

Regular local bus routes run along Walsall Road past the stadium. For larger events, a dedicated shuttle bus typically runs between Birmingham city centre and a transport mall close to the stadium entrance, though this is usually only laid on for bigger fixtures rather than every event held there, so check the specific event's own travel page before relying on it.

Parking

There is no general public parking at or around the stadium. If you are driving, a park and ride option is usually the recommended route in for major events, and a limited number of accessible (blue badge) parking spaces are available but need to be pre-booked rather than turned up for. Always check the current arrangements on the stadium's own site for whatever you are attending, since travel plans can vary between a small UK Championships fixture and a major international event.

Seating and capacity

Permanent seating is around 18,000 across two stands, with temporary stands able to push capacity up to 40,000 for major championships. The track itself is a nine lane, World Athletics Category 1 certified surface, alongside a separate six lane warm up track and throws field.
