Masters athletics in the UK: competing after 35

Athletics does not stop being a competitive sport once you pass your physical peak. It just moves into Masters, a whole separate structure of age-graded competition that runs alongside the senior and junior scene.

When Masters starts

The Masters category begins at 35. From that point, you compete in five-year age bands (35 to 39, 40 to 44, and so on) all the way up past 100, since performance naturally declines with age and the bands keep competition meaningful within your own bracket rather than against athletes decades younger.

Who runs it

The British Masters Athletic Federation (BMAF) organises Masters competition nationally, with regional competition through eleven area associations, and international competition through European and World Masters Athletics. England Athletics affiliated athletes aged 35 and over also get an annual programme of qualifying events and representative opportunities across trail, 5k, 10k, half marathon and marathon distances.

No upper limit

There genuinely is no age ceiling. Recent England Masters teams have included athletes in their eighties, and age-graded scoring means a strong performance for your own age band is recognised properly rather than just compared unfavourably to a 25 year old's raw time.

Getting started

You do not need a special Masters-specific club, an ordinary affiliated athletics club membership covers it, with Masters competition simply being another category you become eligible for once you hit 35. See our guide to finding and joining a club if you are not registered yet, or how to check where you rank once you start competing.
