Wessex League 2026: the final match and the title race

The Wessex Young Athletes Track & Field League finished its 2026 season on Saturday 19 September at Horspath Athletics Track in Oxford. It was a fitting place to finish, as the season started there too, back on 12 April.

The final match

Match 14 was hosted by Oxford City after being rearranged to 19 September. Oxford City, Basingstoke, Slough Junior AC, Marlborough Athletics, Reading and Newbury were down to compete. It was the last of 16 matches across four rounds, involving 24 clubs from Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Wiltshire.

Why it mattered

Every match is scored the same way: six points for the club that finishes first, down to one for last. Going into Horspath, Swindon Harriers led the table on 23 points from four matches. Basingstoke were on 18 from three, which means they'd won every match they'd contested. Reading were on 17, also from three.

That made the final match the decider. A Basingstoke win would take them to 24 points, one clear of Swindon. Second place would draw them level on 23, and a Reading win would also bring Reading level on 23.

When the results will be out

Under league rules, the host club sends draft results to every competing club within 24 hours so they can be checked before they're published. At the time of writing, the Horspath results and the final table hadn't been published yet. They'll appear on the league's fixtures and results page and league table.

The age groups

The league runs under 14, under 16 and under 18 competitions for boys and girls, plus QuadKids for athletes in school Years 5 and 6. Before the final match, Swindon Harriers led or shared the lead in all six main age group tables: under 14 boys (level with Camberley), under 14 girls (level with Team Kennet), under 16 boys, under 16 girls, under 18 men (level with Camberley) and under 18 women. In QuadKids, Team Kennet led the girls' and overall standings and Winchester & District led the boys'.

2026 was the first season under UK Athletics' new age group names, and the league has put its usual recognition of league records on hold for the year because so many new records were expected. Our guide to UK athletics age groups explains the change.

A season across the region's tracks

The 16 matches were spread across 11 tracks: Horspath in Oxford, Down Grange in Basingstoke, Tilsley Park in Abingdon, Sandown on the Isle of Wight, the County Ground track in Swindon, the Charlton track in Andover, the University of Winchester, Woking, King's Park in Bournemouth, Salisbury and Ashdown in Poole.

Each match is a big undertaking for the host club. Rules ask hosts to provide referees, a chief timekeeper, a starter, first aid and an announcer, while every visiting club brings its own qualified officials. None of it happens without volunteers.
