What it costs to join a UK athletics club

There are two separate costs bundled into "joining a club", and understanding the difference stops the total feeling arbitrary.
Club subs
Your club sets and keeps its own membership fee, which covers coaching, facility hire or track access, and running the club itself. This varies a lot between clubs and regions, so there is no single UK-wide figure, and it is worth asking your specific club directly rather than assuming a national number applies.
Governing body registration
On top of club subs, your club registers you with its national governing body: England Athletics, Scottish Athletics, Welsh Athletics, or Athletics Northern Ireland. Individual annual membership with England Athletics for the 2026 to 2027 season is £23, usually collected by your club alongside its own fee rather than paid separately. What the combined fee actually buys
Coached sessions in a safeguarded environment, eligibility to compete officially and have results recorded (worth knowing about if you care where you rank, see our guide to Power of 10), and liability insurance cover through your club's own affiliation.
Cheaper ways to try it first
