The running track in Basildon was built as a cinder one in about 1979 and went synthetic around 1987. Polyflex 953 went down in June 1996, with Athletics Markings Ltd. remarking it that August. August 2001 brought a fresh surface on the inside lane down the back straight and half the top bend. What used to be a double-ended pole vault runway was modified to a central bed. The covered stand was upgraded in about 1984/5, and a mobile uncovered stand stands alongside. Tentative plans would move the long jump and triple jump pits to either end of the pole vault runway, which would let the track gain a full certification. Gloucester Park Arena is thought to be the official name, although the signs don't agree: one calls it Gloucester Park Athletic Stadium, another Athletics Arena. The infield football pitch goes by the Bowl Pitch.
