More about Brentwood School Track
This started out as a redgra running track in Brentwood, built by an old schoolmaster in the 1950s. It was in excellent condition and actually about 6.5 lanes wide, though only 6 lanes were ever marked, and it was never converted from 440 yards. A synthetic upgrade followed in 2012, opened by Fatima Whitbread, and the setting is a beautifully maintained grass sports ground. The school stands near the track at Ingrave Road, BRENTWOOD, CM15 8AS. Dorothy Odam set a world high jump record at Brentwood School Playing Fields on 29th May 1939 in the Southern Counties championships, presumably when there was only a grass track here. Sophie Elliott-Lynn also set a world high jump record at Brentwood on 6th August 1923, although that performance is listed as doubtful and whether it was recorded here isn't known. Plans drawn up in 1995 for a synthetic track at the Brentwood Centre on Doddinghurst Road fell through.
