The running track in Chelmsford opened in 1962 as 6 lane cinder, under the name Melbourne Stadium, and hosted the 1963 English Schools Champs. The synthetic upgrade cost £1.5 million and reopened in April 1999, with a Spiketop TC surface and green runways. Before that work, two adjacent stands alongside the home straight gave covered seating for 700. June 2000 brought news that a £2.2 million Sport England Lottery Fund application had succeeded, covering an indoor centre with a 6 lane 60m straight, facilities for throws and jumps, full changing facilities and a 200 seater stand. The official turf cutting ceremony was held on 24th October 2001, and Chelmsford AC members first used the indoor track on 16th July 2002. Chelmsford Borough Council run the track.
