More about Sutton Arena
The running track in Carshalton began as 440y cinder, with an opening meeting on 6th June 1953. It ran at 180 degrees to the current track and was called Carshalton Sports Arena. At 27 feet wide it held 6 standard lanes plus one narrow 3ft inside lane, used only for distance races. Mitcham AC used it from the early 1960s, merging with Sutton & Cheam AC in about 1984 to form Mitcham & Sutton AC. A Spurtan BS synthetic upgrade followed in 1992, when the name became Sutton Arena and the club became Sutton & District AC, reflecting the borough the track sits in, as Sutton council funded the development. Earth removed to level the surface went into the large banking alongside the back straight. All the runways were green before 2001. The track was resurfaced that year, and the high jump area and the jumps runways are now light blue. An indoor training facility opened next to the track in early 2003. GLL manage the whole facility.
