The running track in Ewell started out as grass, 5 laps to the mile. It became redgra in the winter of 1963/4 at a cost of £32,000, and synthetic in August 1995, laid by Polysports for about £250K. The old pavilion came down in December 1998, and its replacement, the Harrier Centre, was officially opened on 10th September 2000. Club competitions aren't allowed, on the grounds that they are too noisy, although schools meetings are. That is why the steeplechase water jump wasn't put back when the track was resurfaced. Epsom & Ewell Harriers manage the track, which the borough council own.
