Additional Information
An all-weather pitch was built over the centre and one side of this former 400m cinder track in 1999. About 255m of the old track comprising the former back straight, top bend and part of the home straight still exists. The infield used to be a redgra hockey pitch. There used to be a steeplechase water jump on the first bend but this was part of the track that was lost. The HJ fan inside the top bend and the SP fan has been grassed over but the SP circle still exists. The remnants of the PV runway can be seen inside the back straight. A new long jump board was installed in 2001. There did not appear to be a proper DT circle as the external circle is of HT size. The track is managed by the local council and although the lanes are marked in the summer and some maintenance is carried out, Haverhill Striders Athletics Academy stoped using it from 2002 on safety grounds as it is prone to flooding and is slippery in cold weather. It it thought that track be will shortly be redeveloped for other leisure uses. The club has proposed that a 6 lane synthetic track with an 8 lane straight and associated field, storage, floodlighting facilities be built in Haverhill at a local school. The prefered location for the new track is Castle Manor Upper School who have identified land on their site for the track. St. Edmundsbury Borough Council has indicated that will be able to contribute about ?200K to the project.
